Supplies Needed to Blow Out Hair

To properly blow dry your hair, you will need brushes, a hair clip, and a blow dryer with a nozzle.

Blow Dry the Hair

To blow dry your hair at home, you always want to start in the bang area, using a brush the length of the hair. So taking this hair, it wraps around the brush one entire time. When the hair is longer you go to a larger brush. Over direct the hair, wrapping it around the brush, drying the root area to create lift and volume. Hold the brush to let that area cool, and then follow your hair all the way to the end of the brush.

Using a larger brush on the bottom of the head, follow the hair all the way through to the ends. When you come to the next section, again start at the top of the head, working all the way down and all the way around to finish the blow dry. And that's how you blow dry your hair.

How To Make a Sophisticated Ponytail

My name is Antonio Gonzales from Eva Scrivo Hair Salon, and welcome to About.com. Today we're going to talk about a sophisticated ponytail - and one of the main reasons is, because it's so challenging for a woman to create a well polished ponytail, either for a business event or for the evening.

Today were going to use my model Leila to demonstrate this.

Best Hair Texture for Ponytails

So let's talk about the most important part of the ponytail: it's prepping the hair. What we like to do when you work with a ponytail, you probably want to work on hair that's been washed the day before. The reason why is because its not as silky, if you wash it , if you do your pony tail on the day of its generally just a bit slippery or just too clean, so pieces start falling out, especially if you have layered hair.

Prep the Hair for the Ponytail

You can start by blow-drying the hair a bit - just smoothing off the hairline a bit that tends to be a bit frizzy.

Section the Hair

First were going to section off her fringe area, and section off the hairline. Were going to work from ear to ear, just behind the ear, to the crown of the head to the top of the head, and then to the ear again. Then, just take a finger and pull off the top section. And then section off to the top of the head. So basically we've just created the base of our ponytail.

Determine the Ponytail Height

It's important to decide how high or how low you'd like to have the ponytail. So with Leila were going to go just above the bone area, to the back of the head. Were going to take our band, it might be helpful doing this while you're sitting, so you can have tools in your lap. And just clean up your hairline. Its great working with a softer spray to begin with, so that the hair doesn't set like wetting hair.

Ponytails for Layered Hair

If you're someone that has like one length hair, it's very easy to take a section of hair from beneath and wrap around your rubber band to disguise your rubber band. Leila has layered hair so the sections I'll be taking, starting with the left first, will allow me to disguise the band of the hair, and crisscrossing the bobby pins so I can ensure that it holds properly, starting on the next on the other side of the head, taking another section and doing the same.

And I am working with both bobby pins and hair pins. The bobby pin I am using when I find that there is a section of hair that is difficult to hold, it's stronger. And then the hairpin is for the loose pieces.

Style the Sophisticated Ponytail

At this point look in the mirror and see how much of the fringe area you have left. And start designing your fringe. You can then go into the ponytail with a large curling iron, just to soften. And we can leave longer pieces out if you like. I choose to leave longer pieces out of Leila's hair. I think it looks really flattering to her shape of her face. And I am just using a tiny bit of polish, a pomade to polish that. And then were going to go in and spray it in place.

How To File And Buff Your Nails

File and Buff Your Nails. This short video will show you exactly how the experts file and buff nails. This is the natural way to smooth and shine nails. The finished article will add that extra quality to your appearance!

Step 1:: You will need:; * 1 emery board
* 1 Nail buffer with at least 3 grades of grain
* 1 Hand and nail moisturiser
* 1 Fingernail clipper or nail scissors
Step 2:: Wash & dry hands; Wash and dry your hands. Clear away all of the nail dust and all the grime around the edges of the nails. Avoid buffing or filing your nails after a shower or bath, as they will be too soft, and it can cause the nail to flake.
Step 3:: Trim; If you want to take a lot of length off your nails, you should trim them first with a nail clipper or nail scissors.

Trim the nails straight across. Ensure you leave enough length to file and shape later.
Step 4:: The emery board; Make sure your emery board is clean, and still effective. It should be able to shape your nails in a few strokes, otherwise throw it out, and get a new one.

Avoid metal nail files, as these can be a little harsh.
Step 5:: Position; Find a position that you will be comfortable in. You will find it easier if you rest your arms on a table.
Step 6:: Filing; Sweep the nail file across the top of the nail in fluid movements again and again, until you have the shape you want. The file should only lightly touch the nail so as to not damage it.

Sweep it straight across the tip of the nail to get a square shape. If you want a curved shape, angle the emery board slightly on each corner.

Don't file down the sides of your nail, this will weaken it.
Step 7:: Buffers; Buffers remove ridges from nails. They are a natural alternative to nail polish. If you're going to polish your nails then you needn't bother buffing them.

If you have 3 surfaces on your buffer, the coarse surface is used to remove ridges, the smooth surface brings the nail to a matte shine, and the third one is for the final polish.

Some buffers are intended for use with acrylic nails. They will be too harsh for use on natural nails.
Step 8:: Buff to remove ridges; If you have ridges on your nail you can use the coarse side of the buffer to smooth them down.

Swiftly and gently move the buffer horizontally across the nail. 3 or 4 times should be enough to smoothen out ridges.

When the ridges are smooth, stop. Buffing ridges more than once a month will thin your nails.

Ridge filler is a possible alternative if you don't want to buff your nail ridges away.

Just paint it on like nail polish. As it's drying, it sits between the ridges giving you nice smooth nails.
Step 9:: Buff for shine; Now that you don't have any ridges draw the smooth surface across the nails 3 or 4 times or until you get a nice matte shine on the nails.
Step 10:: Make them gleam; To give a final sparkle to your nails, use the polishing surface on the buffer. Move it quickly back and forth across the nail for about 5 seconds. You can do this every week.
Step 11:: Clean and moisturise; Make sure all the nail dust from you nail and finger has been swept away.

Finally use some moisturiser to keep your hands soft and your nail healthy and smooth.

Step 1:: You will need; * Some Nail varnish
* Some Nail varnish remover
* Some Hand and nail moisturiser
* 1 Cuticle stick
* 1 Emery board
* 1 Cotton pad
* Some Cuticle oil
* 1 Cuticle trimmer
Step 2:: Clear your schedule; Take the phone off the hook, and ignore the doorbell. Or at the very least try to allow yourself some time to apply nail varnish properly. It will last longer if you do.
Step 3:: Remove old varnish; You have to remove any old varnish before you put new varnish on. Put some nail varnish remover on to a cotton pad and wipe all of your nails down with it until it's gone.

Try to use remover that doesn't contain acetone or alcohol, this will dry the nails out and make the nail varnish chip.

Also try not to use nail varnish remover more than once a week, your nails need time to recover from all the chemicals to stay healthy.
Step 4:: Cuticle oil; Brush on cuticle oil and massage it in. Leave it on whilst filing to soften your nails.
If you don't have cuticle oil, you can use olive oil or any edible oil.
Step 5:: File your nails; Neaten the shape of your nail, using a file. Only file in one direction, so your nails won't flake at the tip.
Step 6:: Wash your hands; You don't want to put a layer of varnish over a layer of dirt or on top of nail varnish remover, so wash your hands thoroughly first. This gets rid of the nail dust from the filing too.
Step 7:: Tidy up your cuticles; Cuticles are the skin which overlaps on to the nail. It's a natural part of the nail, but oil in the skin means that the nail polish will not stick to it for long.

To soften your cuticles soak your nails in warm water, this can take up to 15 minutes.

A great alternative to this, is to apply cuticle remover to you nails, give your hands a generous coat of moisturiser, and wrap in cling film for 15 minutes. This softens the cuticles, and moisturises your hands!
Step 8:: Get rid of hang nails; If you have any hang nails, trim these off too, with a cuticle trimmer, or with nail scissors.
Step 9:: Remove oil; Wipe down your nails with nail polish remover, so that all the oil is removed. Otherwise the nail varnish would not stay on well.
Step 10:: Apply a thin layer; Open the nail varnish, and wipe the brush on the side of the pot to make sure there isn't too much on it. Your nail varnish will last longer, if you do a few thin layers, rather than a single thick one.
Leave your hand flat. Brush it on quickly in 2 or 3 strokes. You don't need to worry about slight unevenness, it will settle in a nice smooth surface.
Only brush the varnish near but not to the edge of the nail. Don't paint on the cuticle.
Step 11:: Wait; Don't move a muscle until it is fully dry or it might smudge.
Step 12:: Apply more layers; Once the first layer is totally dry put on another layer. Most nail varnish is better and stronger if you put on a few layers.
Step 13:: Tidy up; If you've just got any polish on the skin around your nail, wrap a small amount of cotton wool around a cuticle stick, and add some nail polish remover to gentle rub away the unwanted nail varnish. This is much more precise than a cotton bud.

You will need:

* 1 bottle Top coat
* some Nail polish remover
* 1 Cotton pad
* some Cuticle oil

* 1 Emery board
* some hand & nail moisturiser
* some cuticle remover.

Step 2:: Make some time; Don't rush your manicure, you'll make a mess. Give yourself some time and do it right, it will last longer in the end.
Step 3:: Remove old varnish; You have to all of last weeks varnish off before you put fresh stuff on. Put some nail varnish remover onto a cotton pad and wipe your nails until they are clean.
Step 4:: Cuticle oil; Brush on some cuticle oil and massage it in. Leave it on whilst filing to soften your nails. If you don't have cuticle oil olive oil or any edible oil will work just as well.
Step 5:: File your nails; There's no point in having beautifully manicured nails that are ragged. Take an emery board and run it along the nail tip only in one direction, until you get the shape you want.
When you have finished shaping the nails use a motion like this, to get rid of the frayed edges. This is called beveling.
Step 6:: Tidy up your cuticles; Cuticles are the skin which overlaps on to the nail. It's a Cuticle are the skin that overlaps onto the nail. It is a natural part of the nail, but oil in the skin means that the nail polish will not stick to it for long.
Put on some cuticle oil and soak your nails in warm water until the cuticles soften.

Alternatively you can apply cuticle remover to your nails..... give your hands a generous coat of moisturiser.... and wrap them in cling film for 15 minuets.

Once they're soft, take a cuticle stick and rub it around in very small circles until the dead cuticle is rubbed off. You can then push the cuticles back.
Step 7:: Wash your hands; Clear away all of the nail dust and all the grime around the edges of the nails, you don't want to seal it in.

The nail varnish won't stick well if there is any oily residue on the nails, so wipe them down with a nail varnish remover once more.
Step 8:: Put on a base coat; Wipe off the extra on the side of the bottle. Brush on in 2 or 3 swift strokes.
The base coat provides something for the next layers to cling onto. It also prevent heavily pigmented polish from staining the nail.
Step 9:: Apply the colour; Brush on the colour varnish next. Again make sure there's not too much on the brush. You can put on more layers if you need to deepen the colour.
Wait until the first layer is dry to the touch and then put on a second layer.
Step 10:: Put on a top coat; The top coat is a clear layer that seals in the colour and is harder than the others, so protects the nail.
Step 11:: Let it dry; This coat takes a long time to dry, and if you want a good manicure leave it at least 5 minutes before even checking if it is dry.

To check if it's dry you can lightly touch a nail with your tongue, if you taste nail polish it's not dry.
Stop lint from your clothes sticking to your nails, by putting a little cuticle oil on when they are almost dry.
If you're really in a rush you could try dunking your hands in iced water to speed up the drying process, but this is a very last resort.
Step 12:: Potential mess ups; If you make a mistake; like smudging the top coat, you will have to take it all off that nail and start from scratch.
However if you have just a little polish on the skin around your nail, wrap a small amount of cotton wool around a cuticle stick, add some nail varnish remover then gently then gently rub away the unwanted nail varnish.
Step 13:: Put away your polish; Add a little nail varnish remover to a paper tissue and wipe around the bottle. This will prevent it from becoming sealed shut.

Step 1:

You will need

Make some time

Don't rush your manicure, you will make a mess.
Give yourself some time and do it right.
It will last longer in the end.

Step 3:

Nail Varnish Remover

Get rid of any old nail varnish using some nail varnish remover on a cotton pad.

Step 4:

Cuticle oil

Put on some cuticle oil and massage it in.
Leave it on whilst filling to soften your nails.
If you don't have cuticle oil, olive oil or any edible oil will work just as well.

Step 5:

File your nails

There is no point having beautifully varnished nails that are ragged.
Take an emery board and run it along the nail tip, only in one direction, until you get the shape you want.

Step 6:

Tidy up your cuticles

Cuticles are the skin that overlaps onto the nail.
It is a natural part of the nail, but oil in the skin means that the nail varnish will not stick to it for long.
So to soften your cuticles soak your nails in warm water, this can take up to 15 minutes.

A great alternative to this is to apply cuticle remover to your nails, give your hands a generous coat of moisturiser and wrap in cling film for 15 minutes.
This softens the cuticles and moisturises your hands.

To remove the dead cuticle, rub a cuticle stick around in very small circles so that the dead cuticle is rubbed off.
You can then push the rest of the cuticle back.

Step 7:

Wash your hands

Clean away all of the nail dust and grime so that you don't seal it in.
Wipe the nails down with a little nail varnish remover once again to remove any oil residue, as it will cause the varnish to flake off.

Step 8:

Put on a base coat

Wipe off the extra on the side of the bottle.
Brush on in 2 or 3 careful strokes.
The base coat protects your nails from being stained by the pigments in the coloured varnish.

Step 9:

Put on the tip

You can you use a pink, white or cream colour for the tip.
Cream has a more natural look than white.
Carefully draw a thin line of varnish across the natural white tip of the nail.
If the line looks uneven initially, let it dry, and if you need to, put a second neater line over it.
Make sure it is fully dry before putting on the next layer of nail varnish.

The white tip can be tricky.
Some manicure sets come with stickers that you can paint the tip over.
They guard against putting on a crooked line.

To make the tip application easier, take a small piece of cardboard and cut out a diamond shape.
Put your nail in it and brush along the white tip.
It will stop the varnish going on your skin.

Step 10:

Apply the colour

Brush on the colour varnish next.
Again make sure there's not too much on the brush.
You can put on more layers if you need to deepen the colour.
Wait until the first layer is dry to touch and then put on a second layer.
The classic colour to use for a French manicure is a transparent pink or beige.

Step 11:

Put on a top coat

The top coat is a hard, clear layer. It seals in the colour and protects the nail.

Step 12:

Let it dry

If you want a good French manicure you should leave it at least 5 minutes before even checking if it's dry.

To check if it's dry you can lightly touch a nail with your tongue, if you taste nail varnish it's not dry.

If you're afraid your nails are still tacky, put a little cuticle oil on them to prevent lint from your clothes sticking to them.

Step 13:

Tidy up

If you smudge the top coat or tip you will need to remove all the varnish from that nail and start again.
